Watch: Scaling from independent professional to business leader
Most independent professionals reach a ceiling when they are fully booked, delivering excellent work and yet unable to grow beyond their own hours. The question of whether and how to scale is one that few address directly, until the frustration forces it.
In this session, serial founder, CEO and investor Lou Schillaci shares hard-won lessons from eight founded companies and two corporate CEO roles on what it actually takes to move from solo operator to business leader, and where most people go wrong.

What you'll take away from the session:
-
Why scaling requires more than a bigger client list, and how to identify whether you actually have a scalable business model before you start hiring
-
The cultural and structural work needed to build a team that can represent your brand and deliver without you in the room for every conversation
-
The transition from doing to leading, and why this is the hardest and most important shift a growing consultancy founder will make
-
How to attract clients through lead magnets, packaged services and genuine expertise rather than generic positioning, and why pain-point specificity matters more than broad capability
-
A practical framework for using AI and technology to serve your business rather than becoming a slave to your tech stack
-
Why vision matters as much as strategy, and how sharing it keeps teams aligned through the uncertainty of early-stage growth
This session is for independent professionals who have moved beyond survival mode and are starting to ask what comes next. Lou does not offer a formula, but he does offer the kind of hard clarity that most people in your life will not.
Hit play and hear from someone who has built, led, failed and succeeded across nine startups.
How do you know when your consulting practice is ready to scale?
The signal is not a revenue number or a client count. It is the point at which you can no longer serve your existing clients well because you are the only person delivering. If the quality of your work or your response time is being affected by demand, and if you have a repeatable process others could follow, you are likely at the threshold. The prerequisite, however, is a clear business model. Scaling chaos just produces more chaos.
What is the most common mistake when building a first team?
Hiring people, you already know rather than people with the skills you lack. The instinct to bring in friends or former colleagues feels safe, but it often results in a team that mirrors your weaknesses rather than compensating for them. Lou's principle is straightforward: hire people who are smarter than you in the areas where you are weakest and promote them clearly with clients rather than keeping yourself as the only face of the business. That shift, from being the core to supporting the core, is what makes growth possible.
How do independent consultants build credibility when they no longer have a corporate brand behind them?
Start with what you already have. Use LinkedIn recommendations from past colleagues and clients, build case studies or customer journey narratives from your existing work (anonymised where necessary), and create a single link that consolidates your professional profile across platforms. The goal is not to replicate your previous employer's brand; it is to give people enough evidence to make the call to work with you. Showing how you have solved problems for specific types of clients is far more persuasive than a polished website with generic claims.
How should independent consultants use AI tools without overcomplicating their operations?
Lou's principle is that technology should serve your business, not the other way around. Use AI to enhance your deliverables, speed up research and create reusable content. But verify outputs carefully, particularly any references or data, and do not build a technology stack based on what sounds impressive. If a spreadsheet works, use a spreadsheet. The test for any tool is simple: does this reduce my administration load and help me deliver better? If the answer is no, do not use it.
